This is a story I developed throughout last semester as the culminating project for my reporting class. This assignment challenged students to explore "fault lines" — race, gender, sexual orientation, generation, geography and class — and allowed me to hone in my in-depth reporting skills.

On April 9, TCU Campus Recreation & Wellness Promotion hosted its annual wellness fair in the academic commons. This event is a part of TCU Week of Service, which takes place every semester, and leads up to TCU Day of Service.

Conquering the Cowtown Marathon: Runners from 50 states and 14 countries descend on Fort Worth

The biggest multi-race in North Texas, otherwise known as the Cowtown Marathon, hosted its 47th annual race over the weekend. Over 26,000 runners participated. All 50 states were represented along with 14 countries.

Trash or recycle? Ask the AI-generated Oscar Sort machine

TCU has joined an effort to reduce waste by introducing three AI-powered sorting machines. 
Stationed in King Family Commons, the University Recreation Center and the Mary Couts Burnett Library, the Oscar Sort machine, equipped with a television screen and a camera, sits above trash and recycle bins. Users hold their trash up to the camera to be identified, and then a message on the screen identifies the correct bin for disposal.

TCU Rocks spreads kindness one rock at a time

A TCU sophomore is using rocks to spread uplifting messages across campus. 
Maya Gonzalez, a nursing major, said she was inspired by the response she got in her hometown when she painted rocks and left them out in public spaces. 
“I started painting rocks during COVID and saw a big impact on my community,” said Gonzalez, who’s from Orange County, Calif.
Gonzalez said she decided to start a club at TCU that would leave a positive impression on the community. She founded TCU Rocks this fall.

FORM x TCU: Promoting health, nutrition and wellness among collegiate women

FORM, a women-powered online platform, is starting a collegiate collaboration program at TCU. 
Created in 2021 by Sami Clarke and Sami Spalter, FORM is a subscription-based program that offers workout videos, wellness tips and nutrition plans. Its main focus is to create a community of like-minded women who want to better themselves and those around them.

What we’re reading: Ballot drop box fires and more

Two ballot drop boxes were set on fire early Monday morning from an incendiary device in Portland, Ore. and Vancouver, Wash., according to the Associated Press. 
The ballot drop boxes contain a fire suppression system that is activated when the temperature inside reaches a certain point. The ballots are then coated with a fire-suppressing powder.
The system worked in Portland and only three ballots were damaged. Security personnel helped put out the fire.

The 2015 winner of Miss Texas International and Miss International taught three mental health exercises to the TCU Panhellenic community in the Brown-Lupton University Union Grand Ballroom on Oct. 16.

Tuesday Tunes has been rebranded Commons Coffeehouse, making Monday the new day of the week for live music in the Campus Commons from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

What we’re reading: Latest on Hurricane Helene, California Governor vetoes AI safety bill and more

Record-breaking storm Hurricane Helene was the strongest hurricane to strike Florida’s Big Bend region, according to CNN.
CNN reports 115 people were reported dead across six states, including Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee. The death toll continues to rise. 
There are 2.1 million people without power across South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Virginia.

Cold and flu season is well underway

The Brown-Lupton Health Center reached its highest number of patients this year on Sept. 4, seeing 132 students, Sally King, RN and associate director at the health center, said. 
The first full month of school marks the beginning of cold and flu season. 
“We see more positive tests for various illnesses in September,” King said. 
King also said that the most common health concerns seen at the center are upper respiratory issues, such as sore throats, coughing, congestion and headaches.

Ampersand revamped: a new and improved gathering space near campus

Doubling the size of its TCU location was a risky move for Ampersand, but CEO and co-founder Toan Luong said it was worth it.
“When we were approached with the opportunity from the landlord, we were in the worst financial stage,” said Luong.
Expansion meant the coffee shop, which opened in 2017 with a location near 7th Street, would have to shutter its TCU store.
